Glendon College

Glendon College, located in North York, is a faculty of York University, the third largest University in Canada. Unlike any other liberal arts institution, Glendon offers an integral bilingual experience: it is required that all students study in both French and English. Offering students the chance to study within the context of two languages and two cultures makes the Glendon experience truly unique from all other university faculties across Canada. Glendon distinguishes itself with a strong focus on public affairs, small classrooms and high levels of interaction between students and professors.

Glendon graduates can be found in every public affairs domain. They often play prominent roles in government (at the municipal, provincial or federal level), international affairs, the judiciary, the mass media, communications, the arts, industry, finance, business and education. They are active locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Additionally, Glendon students are frequent recipients of the University Governor-General’s Award.

Glendon's History

The Glendon Campus, established in 1959, was the first site of York University. York had been initially conceived as a small liberal arts faculty modeled after American liberal arts colleges. Within a few years, however, the decision was made to build a larger University campus in Downsview. The Glendon campus was renamed Glendon College and officially inaugurated in 1966 by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson.

The name “Glendon” is derived from the topographical setting of the campus – a glen on the west branch of the Don River. It is nestled on the former suburban country estate built in 1921 by Edward Rogers Wood, founder of Dominion Securities. The majestic manor house, its beautiful rose garden and lush grounds are maintained to this day and provide an inspiring setting for university studies.

As a small, mid-town university focused on the liberal arts, Glendon’s original vision would be shaped by Glendon’s founding principal, Escott Reid. A diplomat, respected scholar and public servant, he provided Glendon with its unique mission and determined the exceptional position Glendon was to occupy within Canada’s university system. Thanks to Escott Reid, and the continued commitment of his successors, Glendon has developed its curriculum to include 20 undergraduate degree programs, two masters’ degree programs and several certificate programs, all within the framework of a bilingual education with a public affairs focus.
